2024 A1R End of the Year Report

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 23, 2025

Highlights

In 2024, A1R executed its commitments to support USA Olympians as well as youth development. Notably, the 49er Team of Ian Barrows, Hans Henken with A1R coach Charlie McKee, won a very competitive US Olympic Trials regatta in January and then the bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games.  This is truly an outstanding achievement in so many ways and serves as inspiration for the entire nation as we head to a home Games in LA in 2028.

Key A1R Achievements in 2024:

  • Supported 36 athletes to compete in the first domestic Olympic trials in years.

  • Provided the Marseille Weather Study and Playbook for Team USA at no cost to athletes and coaches.

  • Supported Dominique Stater, Noah Lyons, and Ian Barrows & Hans Henken in their first Olympic Games as part of TEAM USA.

  • Retained key Project Podium athletes after the Olympic Trials to ensure continuity for their development toward the 2028 Games. These athletes are starting 2025 with well-defined performance plans and support.

  • Ian Barrows and Hans Henken won a Bronze medal in the 49er class.

2024 in Numbers

  • 631 on-the-water coaching days

  • $1.3M spent directly on athlete campaign support, including coaching, travel grants, equipment, technology, weather studies, PET, etc. These funds directly and positively impacted athletes.

  • Administrative costs were approximately 9% of our spend (excluding legal costs associated with the US Sailing lawsuit)

  • Supported 35+ events in 2024, including championships, regattas, training sessions, camps, and regional program clinics.

  • $125,000 in direct athlete grants

A1R worked with 120+ athletes, leveraging coaching expertise and partnerships with Quantum Racing to raise the bar. Our 2nd annual Pensacola Foiling camp gathered sailors from 12 states, Gold medalists and new US Sailing Board members.  A footnote to our 2024 efforts, US Sailing dismissed their misguided lawsuit against A1R and our team in its entirety.   A1R anticipates recovering a substantial part of our defense costs from insurers in 2025 which will be redirected to athlete support.

Looking forward

American One Racing is excited about the next chapter in its 20 year mission of supporting USA sailors.  Our passion and work product has been steadily gaining recognition amongst the athletes, coaches and supporters. Recently, the Sailing Foundation of New York and the Schoonmaker Foundation have joined forces with A1R. These two organizations are determined to make a difference.  They join an already strong coalition of American Magic, Quantum Racing and A1R. Windmark Foundation will continue to support USA athletes with equipment.  This alliance will make a meaningful impact in the training of our athletes as they prepare for 2028 and beyond. For this upcoming quadrenium, A1R will execute a two veins of activity in support of American sailors:

  1. Youth Development: We will continue our long term commitment to supporting America’s most promising youth sailors through our Foiling Pathway: This initiative  continues to identify  young talent, providing top-level coaching, and developing their skills with a strong domestic platform of training camps at regattas, and travel teams to compete in World Championships. The focus is now foiling platforms since foiling is part of most major professional sailing events like the  Olympic Games, America’s Cup, Sail GP, Vendee Globe and Ocean Race. It follows on the youth development work our team did within US Sailing as Project Pipeline and ODP.

  2. Project Podium: This new program will deliver full support for select Olympic campaigns, with a clear performance mission: to secure medals at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.  We have partnered to provide this full support with the Schoonmaker Foundation, American Magic, Quantum Racing, Sailing Foundation of NY, and Windmark Foundation, along with sponsors Oakley, Harken/McLube, and G&B Ropes. Together, we are empowering the nation’s top talent with the resources, innovation, and expertise needed to shine on the world stage.

Talent Currently Identified for Project Podium Support:

  • Charlotte Rose (ILCA 6)

  • Dominique Stater (IQFoil)

  • Noah Runciman (Formula Kite)

  • Noah Lyons & Makani Andrews (IQ Foil)

  • Nevin Snow & Ian MacDiarmid (49er)

These Project Podium athletes have received  years of dedication and support from America One. Most of them have been nurtured and developed through a journey that began with the inception of Project Pipeline in 2014. From their earliest days in the program, they have benefitted from A1R’s unwavering commitment to their growth, receiving guidance, resources, and expertise at every stage. This long-term investment reflects A1R's vision of fostering talent and building a foundation for excellence, ultimately preparing them to excel on the world stage.
